Generator transfer switches manual transfer switch kits for portable generators

A generator transfer switch connects a portable generator to selected home circuits and keeps the house isolated from the utility line while it runs. StormForge supplies manual transfer switches, inlet boxes and cords to electrical distributors, generator brands and private label programs — configured by circuits, amperage, plug type and packaging.

  • Pre-wired manual transfer switches, typically 6–10 circuits
  • 30 A and 50 A class models (by model)
  • Matching power inlet boxes and generator cords
  • Private label housing labels, manuals and kits

How a generator transfer switch works

The switch is installed next to the main panel. Selected circuits — refrigerator, furnace, well pump, lights — are rewired through it. During an outage the homeowner starts the generator outdoors, plugs the cord into a power inlet box on the outside wall and moves each circuit from LINE to GEN. Because each circuit can only take one source at a time, power cannot flow back into the utility line.

Transfer switch vs interlock kit

Pre-wired manual transfer switches come with a whip and conduit fitting, include circuit-level switches and often wattage meters — the most common retail format. Interlock kits are slide plates that prevent the main breaker and a generator breaker from being on at the same time; they cost less but are specific to each panel brand and model. Many distributors stock both. Automatic transfer switches are typically paired with standby generators and are discussed per project.

Matching switch to generator

Buyers usually choose by generator outlet: a 30 A twist-lock outlet pairs with a 30 A class switch and cord, a 50 A outlet with a 50 A class kit. Circuit count depends on which loads the homeowner wants to back up. We publish sizing guidance in your manuals but do not give installation advice — installation must be done by a licensed electrician to local code. Pair the kit with a whole house surge protector for a complete storm-readiness bundle.

Compliance and documentation

We do not claim UL, ETL, CSA, CE, IEC or other listings or certifications by default. Transfer switches are built to the standards you specify on the RFQ, and test reports available for a given model can be provided on request. Responsibility for market compliance remains with the brand owner.

Frequently asked questions

What size generator transfer switch do I need?

Match the switch rating class to the generator outlet (30 A or 50 A) and choose a circuit count that covers the loads to be backed up. Final sizing is the installer’s responsibility.

Can a homeowner install a transfer switch?

Our products are intended for installation by a licensed electrician to local code; we state this in all manuals.

Do you offer interlock kits too?

Yes, interlock kits matched to specific panel models can be quoted alongside transfer switches.

Can you supply 230 V markets?

Changeover switches for 230 V markets can be discussed per project; specify voltage, plug standard and market.

Are your transfer switches UL listed or ETL certified?

We do not claim UL, ETL, CSA, CE, IEC or any other listing, certification or test result by default. Products are built to the standards you specify on the RFQ, and test reports available for a given model can be provided on request. Installation must be done by a licensed electrician to local code.
